I’ve always been a fan of drinks with a little bit of bite to them. Whether it’s from the booze, a citrus or some spice. With these drink it comes from all three. I wanted to marry a high proof rye with a spicy liqueur. Evening these two flavor profiles together was a challenge. I found the connection with the flat cola taste of Averna Amaro and a bit of simple syrup. The result is a harmonious cocktail with a lot of character I’m not afraid to say I’m proud of.
1.5 oz Rittenhouse Rye (or any high quality bottle-in-bond rye of your choice)
0.5 oz Ancho Reyes Chile Liquer
0.5 oz Averna Amaro Siciliano
0.5 oz Simple Syrup
0.5 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
Combine all ingredients into a shaker, shake and strain over ice in a highball glass. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig. (Spank that bad boy to release the aroma.)
